Cordura vs. Other Fabrics: Why Material Matters in Motorcycle Handlebar Bags
Share
A motorcycle handlebar bag takes more abuse than it might seem. It sits exposed to sun, wind, dust, vibration, bugs and changing weather—sometimes for thousands of miles.
That’s why the material matters.
At Moto Pockets, our USA-made motorcycle handlebar bags are constructed with 1000D CORDURA® nylon, a rugged fabric chosen for its abrasion resistance, strength and long-term durability.
What Is CORDURA® Fabric?
CORDURA® is a family of high-performance fabrics known for durability and resistance to abrasion, tears and scuffs. It’s commonly used in demanding applications such as outdoor gear, luggage and workwear.
For a motorcycle handlebar bag, those characteristics are especially important. The bag is constantly exposed to vibration and movement while being subjected to sun, dirt and the occasional rain squall.
Our 1000D CORDURA® nylon gives Moto Pockets handlebar bags the structure and durability we want without making them unnecessarily bulky.
Why 1000D CORDURA® Works Well on a Motorcycle
There are lighter fabrics available, but our priority is building a bag that can handle years of riding.
Abrasion resistance: Handlebar bags can rub against risers, cables, windshields and other parts of the motorcycle. 1000D CORDURA® is designed to withstand heavy wear and abrasion.
Strength: Tools, phones, keys, sunglasses and other riding essentials put constant stress on the fabric and seams. A heavier-duty material helps the bag maintain its shape and integrity.
Weather resistance: CORDURA® nylon provides a strong outer layer for riding in changing conditions. Moto Pockets bags are made for all riding conditions, although they are not intended to be completely waterproof.
Long service life: A motorcycle bag shouldn't be something you have to replace every season. Choosing a durable fabric is one part of building a bag that can stay on the bike for years.
CORDURA® vs. Polyester
Polyester is commonly used in inexpensive motorcycle bags because it can be lightweight and economical. That doesn't necessarily make polyester a bad material, but there can be a significant difference between lightweight polyester and a heavy-duty fabric such as 1000D CORDURA® nylon.
For a bag regularly exposed to the elements on a motorcycle, abrasion resistance and durability are particularly important.
That's one reason we choose 1000D CORDURA® for our handlebar bags rather than selecting a material primarily to reduce manufacturing cost.
CORDURA® vs. Standard Nylon
CORDURA® and ordinary nylon aren't necessarily the same thing.
"Nylon" describes a broad category of synthetic materials available in many different weights, constructions and quality levels. Simply seeing "nylon" in a product description doesn't tell you how durable a motorcycle bag will be.
We specifically use 1000D CORDURA® nylon because it provides the heavy-duty construction we want for a bag that lives on a motorcycle.
What About Imported “Ballistic Nylon”?
You’ll see a lot of imported motorcycle handlebar bags advertised as being made from “ballistic nylon.” It sounds impressive, but that description alone doesn't tell you much about the actual fabric or its quality.
Ballistic nylon is a real type of material, but the term is also used broadly in product descriptions. Imported fabrics marketed as “ballistic nylon” can vary significantly in denier, weave, coatings and overall construction. Simply calling a bag “ballistic” doesn't automatically mean the material is more durable or better suited for motorcycle use.
That's why we believe riders should look past the marketing terminology and ask a simple question: What fabric is the bag actually made from?
At Moto Pockets, we're specific. Our handlebar bags are made in the USA using genuine 1000D CORDURA® nylon. We choose a known, premium material rather than relying on a generic “ballistic nylon” or “heavy-duty” description.
When you're comparing motorcycle handlebar bags, don't just compare how they look or what they're called. Compare what they're actually made from and where they're made.
More Than Just the Fabric
A durable motorcycle bag isn't determined by the shell material alone.
We combine 1000D CORDURA® nylon with YKK AquaGuard® zippers, an internal backer for structure, glove-friendly zipper pulls and a high-visibility gray interior.
The result is a bag designed around actual motorcycle use—not simply a generic pouch adapted to fit handlebars.
American-Made Quality You Can Count On
Moto Pockets handlebar bags are made in the USA and designed for everything from everyday commuting and weekend rides to long-distance touring and ADV travel.
Different motorcycles and riding styles need different bags, which is why we offer several sizes and mounting configurations.
For Harley-Davidson and V-Twin motorcycles, check out the OG T-Bar Bag, Mini T-Bar Bag and Drifter.
For ADV and other motorcycles, the Adventure 11" and Adventure Handlebar Bag provide additional options depending on your handlebar setup and how much storage you need.
Choose the Right Handlebar Bag for Your Motorcycle
Fabric is only one part of choosing a motorcycle handlebar bag. Size, mounting location, handlebar and riser configuration, capacity and accessibility all matter.
But when a bag is going to spend its life exposed on the front of a motorcycle, starting with a durable material makes sense.
That's why we use 1000D CORDURA® nylon.
